Company: Fraunhofer FHR
How can the radiation exposure for patients in cancer diagnostics and therapy be reduced? Researchers at Fraunhofer EMI, together with Fraunhofer FHR and Fraunhofer MEVIS, are taking a surprising approach with the project “Multi-Med” and combining X-rays with radar. The idea: An initial CT scan provides high-resolution reference data. Subsequent examinations are replaced by the less burdensome radar technology, into which knowledge from the first X-ray scan flows via intelligent algorithms. Body scanners at airports also work with radar waves and make the body visible under clothing. The advantage of the technology: The waves can also depict tissue changes in the body at suitable frequencies without being harmful to health. The patent for the combined radar-X-ray tomography has already been granted, and now the further development of the technology is underway. How Dr. Victoria Heusinger-Heß and her team are rethinking medical imaging—and what other applications the technology offers—c
