How do you inform the nursing staff that you are in pain when verbal and nonverbal communication is no longer possible? People with acute confusion suddenly face these challenges. Within hours or days, they can no longer effectively communicate with their environment. They cannot make sense of statements from others, they do not know where they are, what is happening, and they develop hallucinations. Affected individuals often become restless, start trembling, and experience rapid heartbeat – a situation that triggers anxiety in many patients. In Switzerland, about 10 percent of people over 85 years old develop delirium, but younger people can also be affected by acute confusion, for example, after an infection, inflammation, or surgery.
